meathead supreme: big guy, big smile. "does he ever close his mouth?" probably not. jacked, tries to seem unimposing while also spreading across any surface he's seated on like he's a liquid. his cajun accent's softened some over the years.

it's hard to scav clothes and shoes in his size so he dresses for function — flannels, hoodies, tees, jeans, workboots, denim. coveralls when needed. colour coordination is less important than "is it mostly clean?"

tattoos: a robot buddy done by duke on his left forearm. a ring on his left ring finger from his second marriage to court ("'cause it's for real this time"). a poorly done tribal band around his right bicep because it was the '90s. misc scars from a childhood of junkyard & bayou misadventures.

CHILDHOOD: LOUISIANA

baby arlo's parents handed off his care to his sisters and he grew up a latchkey kid who rambled around their family-owned junkyard and the louisiana countryside. an accident came along when he was 14 and his new baby brother, duke, became his resposibilty. he wasn't as savvy or capable as his sisters but he tried his best, raising the li'l dude as 'one of the guys' on all their teenaged misadventures.

ADULTHOOD: PNW

he married his high school sweetheart at 18 because it's what he thought he was supposed to do — and after three years of arguments and mutual infidelity, she left him for his best friend. tbh this was fine except for how everyone in Cut Off knew, and so he was looking for any reason to leave their tiny town. and he found it in wildland firefighting.

a few years on hotshot crews in the PNW, a hot paramedic (hi court), a brother IN JUVIE??? (wtf duke), a wedding (hi court), settling down in danforth, a position with the local FD. a divorce (bye court), an alleged personal growth, another marriage (hi court), an outbreak.

POST-OUTBREAK: ROAMING

first responders got no rest in the early days and that suited arlo just fine; he and court worked until their jobs' infrastructures fell with society. he tried to get duke out but his brother's detention house had been overrun and—after one zombie therapeutically smashed to smithereens—he knew had to accept that he wouldn't see him again.

they joined a "civilian relief organization": a ragtag, nomadic group travelling around to help small enclaves, until a devastating fall thunderstorm took out the barn they'd sought shelter in and that opened the way for a zombie horde. only a few survived, and over the next few weeks, their number dwindled until it was just court and arlo.

NOW: PRESCOTT FIRE STATION

low on supplies and even lower on morale, the couple made their way to prescott last july — and they found familiarity and routine and jobs and they stayed. it's been good for arlo because the station's full of likeminded people ignoring their own trauma to work too much and there's always 20 things (or people) to keep him busy. his recent promotion to fourth-in-command was all bitter/no sweet: celia was the presence that kept him at prescott in the early days and he'd come to look up to her, even sometimes try to emulate her leadership style. now he has responsibility, no leader (... sorry jem, you know what he means), and no playbook.

MISCELLANEOUS

➔ his and court's second divorce was earlier this year. given that town hall isn't what it once was, they made it official by signing a piece of paper that says "WE'RE DIVORCED NOW."

➔ arlo's horse is a gelding named pilot, notable as being the only sweet horse in their stables. he's also dumb as a bag of rocks. he's not named "pilot" because he knows where to go — it's another word for a cowcatcher, and pilot earned it because without guidance he'd crash through a horde of zombies without a second thought. he likes to lick things.
